Sleep Problems Linked To Weight Gain In Middle-Age

If you are a middle-aged or older woman, read on…
Studies show that having trouble sleeping may indicate that you are gaining weight. On the other hand, women who are well-rested at night have significantly lower risks of being heavier. New finding published in the International Journal of Obesity provide evidence that sleep problems among women are related to weight gain.
About one third of women with sleep problems gained about 11 pounds. It is not clear however, whether it is the weight gain that causes problems with sleeping or vice versa.
No such relationship between sleep problems and weight gain was observed in men. This may be attributed to the significantly smaller number of male participants in the studies.
There is evidence however, that sleep loss can lead to changes in the levels of the appetite-regulating hormones leptin and ghrelin — which could… in theory, spur sleep-deprived people to overeat.
