Elderly Assisted Living Bill

The Georgia state Senate on Monday has unanimously passed a bill the would make it easier for elderly Georgians to stay in assisted living facilities as their health declines. The current law had no official "assisted living" designation, and such facilities were licensed as personal care homes.
For this reason, residents of these facilities were required to be able to take their own medications and be mobile enough to get around in the case of an emergency. The Senate Bill 178 will now allow facilities with 25 beds or more to use medication aides and keep residents who need more assistance getting around, as long as there is an adequate staff to assist residents during an emergency. Supporters of the bill say it will prevent Georgians from being forced into nursing homes against their wishes.
